Explaining the nomination of Karim Wade for President of Senegal

"I think it has less to do with some deep-seeded belief that Karim Wade will be a great President of Senegal, and more to do with showing defiance in the face of the court decision that's expected on his corruption case coming this week...Senegalese politics is very fractured; it's not a 2-party state like other African countries such as Ghana or Sierra Leone or Nigeria, [and] 2 years in Senegalese politics is several eternities, so it's hard for me to believe that everyone will just line up behind Karim Wade, there's likely to be a number of others who get into the race and it will be settled in a runoff."
